HAProxy Load Balancer Solution

Managed HAProxy for high-availability deployments.

HAProxy 2.8 LTS with Keepalived for a floating IP across a HA pair, SSL termination, sticky sessions, HTTP/2, active health checks, and a Prometheus exporter wired into Grafana. Up to 8 backend pools and 64 servers per pair.

What you get

A load balancer that doesn't take itself down.

HAProxy is the load balancer that the rest of the internet is built on. We deploy 2.8 LTS with a config tuned for modern web traffic: HTTP/2 at the edge, TLS 1.3 with strong ciphers, active health checks against your backends, circuit breaking when they misbehave, and sticky sessions via cookie or source IP for stateful apps.

For high availability, add the active/passive pair option (+$15/mo). Keepalived runs VRRP between two HAProxy nodes, exposing a floating IP that fails over in under 3 seconds if the primary disappears. Your backend keeps serving without anyone noticing.

TLS certificates from Let's Encrypt are issued and renewed unattended. The HAProxy Stats UI is reachable over TLS at a non-default path, with HTTP basic-auth and rate limiting. The Prometheus exporter exposes every metric HAProxy publishes so you can build SLO dashboards in Grafana.

Tech stack
  • HAProxy 2.8 LTS — L4 + L7 load balancing
  • Keepalived — VRRP, floating IP failover
  • Let's Encrypt — auto issue + renew
  • Prometheus exporter — metrics ready
  • HAProxy Stats UI — TLS, auth, rate-limited
  • nftables — stateful firewall
  • fail2ban — SSH + Stats UI brute-force
What's included

Load-balancing features production wants

8 pools, 64 servers

Route to up to 8 backend pools with up to 64 servers each. Plenty of room for blue-green and canary patterns.

Active health checks

Per-backend HTTP/HTTPS/TCP checks. Bad nodes are drained automatically; recovered nodes rejoin gradually.

SSL termination

TLS 1.3 with strong ciphers, HTTP/2 at the edge, OCSP stapling. A+ on SSL Labs out of the box.

Sticky sessions

Cookie-based or source-IP affinity for stateful applications. Configurable per pool.

HA pair option (+$15)

Keepalived + VRRP across two HAProxy nodes with a floating IP. Sub-3-second failover, transparent to clients.

Stats UI + metrics

HAProxy Stats UI for live state, Prometheus exporter for Grafana dashboards and SLO alerting.

Use cases

When you reach for HAProxy

  • Web application HA — multiple app servers behind one virtual IP
  • Blue-green deploys — switch traffic between two pools without dropped connections
  • Canary releases — send 5% of traffic to a new version, watch metrics, ramp up
  • Geo-routing — direct users to nearest backend by country header
  • API rate limiting — protect upstream services with HAProxy stick tables
  • Database proxy — L4 routing for read/write splitting
FAQ

Common questions

How does the HA pair work?
Two HAProxy nodes, both running, both ready. Keepalived runs VRRP and exposes a floating IP. If the primary disappears, the floating IP migrates to the secondary in under 3 seconds. Sessions on TCP connections may drop; new connections continue seamlessly.
How many requests per second?
HAProxy is fast. On a 2-vCPU VPS, expect 5k–10k req/s of pure HTTP routing. A 4-core dedicated comfortably handles 30k+. Bottlenecks are usually upstream, not HAProxy.
Can I edit the HAProxy config myself?
Yes — we hand you SSH access and the config in /etc/haproxy. Or open a ticket and we'll make the change for you. Config is version-controlled, so we can roll back any change.
nginx as a load balancer instead?
For pure HTTP load balancing nginx works too. HAProxy is preferred when you need L4 (TCP), sophisticated health checks, stick tables, or stats / observability. Ask if you want an nginx-based custom solution.

Ready to put a load balancer in front?

HAProxy with TLS, health checks and stats — ready in minutes. Add HA failover for $15/mo extra.
